MEETING TO INITIATE CELEBRATIONS OF 50 YEARS OF RH DISEASE PROPHYLAXIS
Date: February 5, 2018
Location: Columbia University, New York, U.S.A
This year will mark the 50th anniversary celebration of the first use of Rh immunoglobulin. A meeting to celebrate 50 Years of Rh Disease Prophylaxis was organized by the Department of Pathology & Cell Biology at Columbia University Medical Center - New York Presbyterian Hospital.
Chaired by Prof. Steve Spitalnick, Executive Vice-Chairman of the Department. Dr. Lee Goldman, the Dean of Columbia made some introductory remarks, as did Mr. Paolo Marcucci, the CEO of Kedrion S.p.A., a major supporter of the Consortium for the Universal Rh Disease Elimination (of CURhE) and co-sponsor of the meeting.
In the 1960s, Dr. John G. Gorman, Director of the Blood Bank at Columbia University in collaboration with Vincent Freda, a former member of the Columbia Obstetrics and Gynecology Department, and William Pollack from Ortho Pharmaceutical Corporation, helped develop RhoGAM for human use.
Yes, Rh disease prevention has been available and effective for 50 years now. However, tragically, it is a scourge in many developing countries because those countries do not have Rh prevention programs. CURhE’s goal is prevention of Rh disease worldwide.
Several events have been planned through to mark the 50th anniversary of Rh prophylaxis
